Once you've flashed the firmware to the drive, you should be able to load up Xbox Backup Creator to start ripping discs, and ABGX360 to verify the dumps. While a Kreon drive would be easier to install in a PC case to set and forget, a 360 drive is much better for ripping. You need a 360 drive, or worst case, what's called a 'Kreon' drive to rip discs. If your DVD drive isn't working, you're gonna need another 360 DVD drive of some kind. Homebrew applications and hacks are not limited to piracy, and it opens the door to legal threats and irritation.
